Get your home ready for next summer

The time to fix an overheating room is before it's hot again.

Start with a list

While it's fresh in your mind, note which rooms were too hot, at what time of day, and which way their glass faces. That one list makes every later decision easier.

Look at the glass

In most overheating rooms, glass is the cause: conservatory roofs, glass extensions, rooflights and large south or west facing windows. Note the type of glazing and roughly how old it is.

Compare the options

Shading, blinds, ventilation, film and replacement glazing all have different costs, disruption and looks. Some, like external shading on a listed home, may need permission, which takes time. Autumn and winter leave room to compare them without the pressure of a heatwave.

Book the work before spring

Trades that deal with summer heat get busiest once the first hot days arrive. Booking earlier gives you more choice of dates.

Can window film be fitted in winter?

Yes. Film can be fitted all year. In cold weather it takes longer to cure fully, so it may look slightly hazy for a little longer after fitting, but it will be settled well before summer.
